Lore & Background

Karl Schäfer was once a Nazi archaeologist who, during World War II, led an expedition into the Rub' al Khali desert in search of the legendary city of Ubar. The expedition ended in disaster, with Schäfer being the sole survivor, left with a deep knowledge of the desert and a profound guilt over the fate of his men. He later became a guide for treasure hunters, including Nathan Drake, whom he first met years before the events of Uncharted 3.

In Their Own Story

The wind howled across the dunes as Schäfer lit a cigarette, its ember the only warmth in the freezing desert night. 'You think you know the desert, boy?' he rasped, his voice like gravel scraped over stone. 'It doesn't forgive. It doesn't forget.' He took a long drag, exhaling smoke that vanished into the darkness. 'Out there, I lost everything. Men, sanity... a piece of my soul. But the city? It's still waiting. And it will take you too, if you let it.' He crushed the cigarette against his boot, the gesture final, as if he were stamping out a memory.

Reader's Guide

Karl Schäfer is a recurring ally in Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception. He first appears in the game's prologue, set in a London pub, where he gives young Nate a ring that sets the story in motion. Later, as an older man in Syria, he guides Nate and Sully through the desert, revealing his tragic past. Schäfer's arc is one of redemption and sacrifice; he ultimately gives his life to help Nate escape from Talbot, cementing his role as a mentor figure. His key relationship is with Nathan Drake, whom he sees as a younger version of himself, and he shares a tense history with Victor Sullivan. Signature moments include his cryptic warnings about the desert and his final stand against Talbot. The character was voiced by British actor Richard Ridings, whose gruff delivery added depth to Schäfer's weary wisdom.
